Pájaro Libre started the way most good things do — around a fire, with people who had nowhere else to be, and a woman who figured she could mix a better smoke than the one the store sold her.
The prairie doesn't ask you for credentials. It asks whether you'll sit still long enough to hear it. We spent a lot of evenings out past the fence line learning that lesson: mullein along the ditch, mugwort where the ground stayed damp, mint gone wild in the shade of a stock tank. Plants that grew without permission. All organic. All ours for the taking.
We started blending them because rolling something with your own hands, from things you can name, feels different than buying something with a barcode and a warning label. Everything we sell is certified organic, prepared in small batches by hand, and rolled or pouched the same week it ships. No tobacco. No nicotine. Just leaf and flower and the particular quiet that comes with a slow smoke — or a slow cup.
But not every herb works both ways. We tested each plant as tea and as smoke, and some surprised us. Licorice root deepens a cup beautifully — yet broken and burned it turns to fine, hair-like fibers that bite the lungs. We left it out. What made the final blends are herbs that behave well in combustion and translate into a clean cup, so every blend is intentionally curated to steep or smoke.

The hawk came later. A kestrel, really, working the wind over a stretch of highway fence — hanging dead still in a headwind, going exactly where it meant to go. That's the whole idea. Sovereignty isn't loud. It's the willingness to hold your position while everything pushes.
The hat is a joke and it isn't. Frontier spirit was never about conquering anything. It was about being self-possessed enough to make your own provisions, and generous enough to share them when someone rides up.
So: small batches. Real plants. A pouch you'd reach for again.
We still mix every blend ourselves, still weigh it out on the same scale, still tuck each pouch into its box by hand. When your order goes out, one of us packed it. That's not a marketing line — it's just the size we've chosen to stay.
For the ones who gather.
